Good to know
What is there to do in Pokhara?
Pokhara sits on Phewa Lake below the Annapurna range. People come for sunrise hikes to Sarangkot and the World Peace Pagoda, multi-day treks such as Poon Hill and Mardi Himal, paragliding, boating on the lake, and the caf茅s, music and markets of Lakeside. Meerkat lists the treks, events and volunteering run by locals, with dates and prices.
Do I need a guide or a permit to trek near Pokhara?
Short hikes such as Sarangkot and the Peace Pagoda need neither. Treks into the Annapurna Conservation Area (Australian Camp, Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Annapurna Base Camp) need an ACAP permit, and since 2023 foreign trekkers in Nepal's conservation areas are expected to walk with a licensed guide. Rules change, so check before you go; Meerkat guides can help, and you can apply for your permit on Meerkat.
When is the best time to visit Pokhara?
October to November and March to May bring the clearest mountain views and the best trekking. December to February is cold but often clear. June to September is monsoon: green and warm, with rain most afternoons and cloud over the peaks.
How do I join a trek or an event on Meerkat?
Open the listing, tap Join, and you are on the list; the guide or host can message you. It is free to sign up, and the Meerkat app adds your tickets, chat and a reminder the evening before.
Can I volunteer in Pokhara for a day?
Yes. Local social organizations post clean-ups, teaching sessions and community projects on Meerkat, often for a morning or a day. Volunteering listings are free to join.
